Toronto's Mutual-Aid Landscape, Live-Verified
Every named organization checked alive-or-dormant on 14 Aug 2026, method and date per row — because a directory nobody re-verifies becomes a list of dead phone numbers.
Every row below was checked TODAY by direct fetch or current-record search after the operator's correction ("verify everything in Toronto, most of that is not active any longer" — he was right). Method column says how. Rules: a live website is NOT proof of a live group (two sites below are frozen in 2022); a dead umbrella is not proof the cells died; anything Facebook/Instagram-only is marked UNVERIFIABLE-FROM-HERE, not guessed.
The headline, honestly: Toronto's COVID mutual-aid wave is dead. CareMongering-TO (the movement's global spark) is inactive; the pod networks (Davenport, Progress Toronto's) are frozen COVID-era pages; the MPP "mutual aid" resource pages are stale lists. What survived is what either (a) institutionalized (settlement-house agencies, food banks), or (b) specialized around one sharp function (fridges, bike delivery, encampment outreach). Nobody is operating a general neighbour-to-neighbour mutual aid network in Beaches–East York in 2026. The field is open — and the graveyard is the design brief.
1. The COVID cohort — status verified
| Group | Status 2026-08-14 | Evidence · method |
|---|---|---|
| CareMongering-TO (b. 2020-03-10, 25k+ members, 246 global chapters) | DORMANT / HISTORICAL | "Most caremongering Facebook groups… now deleted or inactive" (Globe & Mail); "The death of caremongering" (The Conversation). Search, no live-activity signal found. Treat as lineage + lesson, never as infrastructure. |
| Encampment Support Network (umbrella, 6 sites) | DISSOLVED early 2022 | Stated on ESNP's own site; their city-wide Twitter is an archive. |
| ESN Parkdale | SITE LIVE · ACTIVITY UNCONFIRMED | Direct fetch today: site up, but newest dated content/photos are 2022; Patreon unreachable from sandbox; IG/X not fetchable. Do NOT cite as active without a human check of @esn.parkdale. |
| Mutual Aid Parkdale (MAP) | DORMANT-PRESUMED | No live site found; only 2020–21 mentions (TEA blog). |
| Davenport Mutual Aid Network | DORMANT-LIKELY (site frozen COVID-era) | Direct fetch today of davenportmutualaid.ca: live page, but text is explicitly pandemic-era (weekly pod-leader calls via bit.ly link). Still the single best Toronto precedent for OUR design: a riding-framed network of block pods with templates + weekly pod-leader check-ins. Steal the model; don't cite the group as live. |
| Progress Toronto neighbourhood-pods drive | HISTORICAL (Mar 2020) | Recap page is a dated artifact. |
| People's Pantry / MPP resource lists (Stiles, Glover pages) | STALE COVID-era link lists | Pages exist; contents are 2020–21 vintage. Not a current directory. |
2. The specialized survivors — verified
| Group | Status 2026-08-14 | Evidence · method |
|---|---|---|
| Community Fridges TO | LIKELY ACTIVE · scale unverified | Direct fetch today of communityfridgesto.org: operating site (volunteer / host-a-fridge / partners / Substack). Last public count: 8 fridges (May 2022, Wikipedia). Current count + any Danforth-area fridge = R2 field-verify (the 2024 Cub-Scout pantry at Danforth/Coxwell, Toronto Observer, also unverified since). |
| The Bike Brigade | SITE LIVE · presents as operating | Direct fetch today of bikebrigade.ca: 1,000+ volunteer riders, partner-request and rider-portal flows live. No dated 2026 receipt visible in fetch — quick human confirm before listing as a delivery partner. |
| Parkdale People's Economy | ACTIVE (2025 receipts) | parkdalepeopleseconomy.ca live; 30+ member orgs; community forum Feb 2025 (planning project). West-end; the maturity model for what BEY could become, not a BEY actor. |
| Ktown for All-style encampment outreach (for contrast: LA's is thriving) | — | Toronto's equivalent layer post-ESN is fragmented; R2 maps who actually walks east-end encampments now (likely agency outreach teams per EC21.6's 36 outreach rows). |
| Show Up Toronto directory | UNVERIFIABLE FROM SANDBOX | showuptoronto.ca returns a JS app shell to fetch; needs a browser check before relying on its listings. |
3. The institutional anchors in/near the riding — verified ACTIVE
| Org | Verified today | What they are for the pilot |
|---|---|---|
| Community Centre 55 (97 Main St) | Direct fetch: content updated 2026-07-30, Summer Camp 2026, Share A Christmas program, volunteer page — centre55.com | THE partnership anchor: City agency + charity, BEY-native since 1975, runs the riding's signature neighbour-help program (Share A Christmas). Hub-Hour host candidate #1. |
| Eastview Neighbourhood Community Centre (86 Blake St) | Direct fetch: live, City of Toronto agency, Food Access program — eastviewcentre.com | The no-proof-of-need food bank tradition (Toronto Observer 2024 — re-confirm current hours in R2); west edge of the pilot ground. |
| Salvation Army East Toronto Corps (107 Cedarvale Ave, Woodbine/Danforth) | 211 record with current hours (Tue 10–3, Wed 8:30–11:30, Thu 8:30–3) + Chat & Chew Thursdays | In-riding food bank + weekly communal meal — exactly the rhythm we amplify. |
| The Neighbourhood Group / Neighbourhood Link (3036 Danforth Ave) | Healthline record updated 2026-02; seniors services, 600+ volunteers, 11k people/yr | The seniors-support spine of the riding; their volunteer base is our natural ally, their clients our first check-in list. |
| 211 Central | Provincial infrastructure, East York food listings current | The referral backbone. The network routes THROUGH 211, never competes with it. |
Still to verify in our team (named, not guessed): WoodGreen, Applegrove Community Complex, Ralph Thornton Centre, Michael Garron/East Toronto Health Partners' community programs, Glen Rhodes/East End United food ministries, Danforth Jewish Circle social action, mosque and church food programs along the Danforth, Daily Bread member banks inside the federal riding boundary, any surviving community fridge east of Coxwell.
4. What the graveyard teaches (binding on the design)
- Enthusiasm is not a structure. CareMongering hit 25k members in weeks and still died —
scale without rhythm, roles, and care jobs is a balloon, not a building (matches the UK 75%-decay literature exactly).
- Cells outlive umbrellas; functions outlive movements. ESN's umbrella died, one cell
fought on; the general networks died, the fridge/bike/food specializations survived. Our network = light umbrella + sharp functions (the loop, the walk, the Hub Hour) + block cells.
- Institutions are the continuity layer. Everything verified ACTIVE in the riding is 50+
years old or government-backed. A network that WEAVES the agencies together with neighbour capacity inherits their continuity; one that competes with them inherits the graveyard.
- Facebook is where Toronto mutual aid went to die. Every dead group lived on Meta; every
design doc we ship keeps the coordination spine on owned/portable platforms (Discord export, Signal, the site) with paper/phone front doors.
- The riding-framed pod network was already invented here (Davenport, 2020). It didn't
survive COVID's end because it was built FOR COVID. Ours is built for the permanent base of the pyramid — need that does not expire.
