Food Today & Groceries

If you need to eat today, start with the first section. Most of what's listed there — hot meals, drop-ins, community fridges — is walk-in: no appointment, no registration, no waiting list. A few food banks in that same section are the exception and require calling ahead to book; each one opens with a bolded call-first note so you can tell at a glance which doors are open right now and which need a call first. Once today is handled, the sections below cover food for kids at school (school year only — September to June; if you're reading this outside those months, the first section above is where to look instead), stretching a grocery budget week to week through discount practices, campus food banks, and cultural or special-diet food programs.

Food bank — appointment required, Tuesday-morning booking window only.

Syme Woolner Neighbourhood & Family Centre — Food Bank Program The provider's own page opens by stating access is "by appointment" — don't assume 190 Woolner is a pure walk-in without calling first. 190 Woolner Ave: Thu/Fri 9:00am–1:30pm. 2468 Eglinton Ave W: Fridays 9:30am–1:30pm, appointment only, call (416) 766-4634. Chasdei Kaduri — Jewish Food Bank Free weekly home delivery of Kosher non-perishable groceries, fresh bakery goods, produce, eggs, dairy and hygiene supplies, chosen by approved clients through an online "shop," delivered Wednesdays 7–11pm. For Jewish families of any denomination living below the Government of Canada poverty line. chasdeikaduri.org/get-help Who it's for: income-qualifying Jewish households. That covers North York/North Toronto up to Lawrence Ave but does not reach most of the City of Toronto proper. Requires an online application plus a Notice of Assessment and 3 months of bank statements; review takes about 2 weeks. Phone: (289) 963-5900.

PWA's Financial Assistance program (for HIV-related costs) is currently curtailed to emergency-only cases, pending PWA's own August 2026 Bike Rally fundraiser — it is not a standing fund right now; call (416) 506-1400 to ask before relying on it. Essentials Market days: Wed/Thu 2–7pm, Fri 12–5pm (closed Mon/Tue). 163 Queen St E, 2nd Fl. pwatoronto.org/practical-supports Who it's for: people living with HIV/AIDS, Toronto — the only food bank in Toronto that exclusively serves this community. Honesty flag: donation-dependent, not a guaranteed standing service — the provider's own page confirms this is opportunistic, "whenever possible" drop-offs, not a scheduled program. Treat the Humane Society's pet food bank above as the more reliable first call. torontocatrescue.ca — food assistance Who it's for: cat owners, Toronto. Online or phone (416-538-8592).

My kids need food at school (school year only — see "I need food today" above if it's summer)

Student Nutrition Program (SNP) Runs during the school year only — September through June. It is not running as of this writing (2026-07-30, mid-summer) and won't resume until the fall term. When school is in session: free breakfast, morning meal, lunch and/or snack programs at Toronto schools and community sites, universally available to every student regardless of family income — no application, no means test. Over 230,000 Toronto students participate daily. Access is set at the school/site level, so which meals are offered and how often varies by school; once the school year resumes, ask your child's school office what's running there. Need to feed a kid today, right now, in summer? Go back to "I need food today" above — Community Fridges Toronto, Good Shepherd Ministries and the other walk-in doors listed there serve anyone, kids included, no eligibility test. The service is real and has run in prior semesters, but the current schedule still isn't published. Managed at store-manager discretion, not guaranteed daily; shoppers report Tuesday/ Thursday mornings as the best times to check, and named Front & Bathurst and St Clair & Yonge as reliable locations.
