Toronto has a lot to do for nothing. This guide covers year-round free things (museums, parks, movies, music, sport, streaming) first, then a clearly-dated section for what's actually running this season — because "free today" and "free in theory" are different promises. A few entries are things other Torontonians report doing, not official programs; those are labelled as crowd practice, not verified venue policy.

I want to watch a movie for free tonight

Toronto Outdoor Picture Show (TOPS) Free outdoor film screenings in Toronto parks through the summer festival season (16th season in 2026, running late June through August at rotating venues — Christie Pits, Corktown Common and others; Fort York is not used in 2026 due to a scheduling conflict). CBC Gem — free ad-supported tier Free streaming with ads via a no-cost CBC Account — the full on-demand CBC catalogue, all 14 live local CBC TV channels, plus CBC News Explore/CBC Comedy/Olympic Channel live streams. No account at all still unlocks live events and ad-free kids shows. Honest negative: Hockey Night in Canada will not air on CBC/Gem starting the 2026-27 season — the CBC-Rogers/Sportsnet sub-licensing deal for NHL games was not renewed as Rogers' new 12-year NHL rights deal begins, ending roughly 90 years of free NHL broadcasts on CBC. CBC's replacement is a new Saturday-night sports show featuring non-NHL Canadian athletes — not a hockey substitute. Sportsnet 590 The Fan — free radio broadcasts Free live radio coverage of the Toronto Blue Jays (flagship station), plus Toronto Maple Leafs, Raptors and Toronto FC games — always free via AM 590 broadcast and Sportsnet's own streaming; no game-viewing paywall for radio the way there is for Sportsnet+/TV. I want to see live sport without paying pro prices

U SPORTS Varsity Blues home games (University of Toronto) In-person college sports (hockey, basketball, football, volleyball and more) at U of T venues; general-public tickets run roughly $10-15/game. Children 5-and-under and U of T students/staff (with TCard) get in free. varsityblues.ca/feature/tickets Who it's for: anyone, Toronto. Not free for general public — genuinely cheap ($10-15) compared to pro games; free for U of T students/staff with TCard and children 5 and under.

Raptors 905 (G League) In-person NBA G League basketball (Toronto Raptors' development-league affiliate) at Paramount Fine Foods Centre; tickets from roughly $12-30, far below Raptors NBA prices. raptors905.gleague.nba.com Who it's for: anyone. Not free — a genuinely cheap paid option. Venue is in Mississauga (GTA/ Peel Region), not the City of Toronto proper.

I want free music, or a place with live music that doesn't require money

Canadian Opera Company — Free Concert Series (noon concerts) Free noon-hour concerts in the glass-enclosed Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre at the Four Seasons Centre, running roughly September through May; first-come, first-served, all ages. coc.ca/community/free-concert-series Who it's for: anyone, Toronto. Walk in. Seasonal (Sept-May) — as of this writing (late July) the series has concluded its prior season; a new-season announcement is expected in late August. Check before planning a visit.

Toronto Symphony Orchestra — Open House & Free Concert An annual free, all-ages day at Roy Thomson Hall — free drop-in lobby activities (instrument try-outs, composing stations, live TSO musician performances) all morning, plus a free ticketed full-orchestra concert in the afternoon. tso.ca/concerts-and-events/open-house-and-free-concert Who it's for: anyone, Toronto. Annual (one day/year, typically September) — free concert tickets are claimed quickly once released. Walk in for the lobby activities regardless. As of this review (2026-07-28), TSO's own event page still shows the September 2025 edition with no 2026 date posted yet — the same season-gap shape as the COC concerts below; recheck closer to fall.

The Tranzac A member-driven nonprofit arts venue with nightly live music, open stages and community programming across four rooms. Many recurring nights (e.g. the Southern Cross open stage) are free or pay-what-you-can at the door, though some ticketed club nights carry a cover charge — check the specific night before going. tranzac.org Who it's for: anyone, Toronto. Musical Instrument Lending Library (TPL) Borrow guitars, ukuleles, violins, drums, keyboards, banjo, mandolin and more, free with a TPL card — 3-week loan with 2 renewals (up to 9 weeks total). Sistema Toronto Academy Up to 10 hours/week of free ensemble-based music instruction (strings, percussion, choir) for children, modeled on Venezuela's El Sistema. sistema-toronto.ca Who it's for: children in three priority neighbourhoods (Parkdale, Jane/Finch, East Scarborough) — not citywide.

I want a museum, gallery or attraction that's free (or free with a library card)

Toronto Public Library — tpl:map (Museum + Arts Pass) One free admission pass per participating attraction per calendar year, capacity-capped — passes are limited and a reservation does not guarantee one. Current partners include AGO, ROM, Ontario Science Centre: KidSpark at Harbourfront Centre, Toronto Zoo, Ripley's Aquarium, Aga Khan Museum, Gardiner Museum, The Village at Black Creek, Bata Shoe Museum, plus several performance-based partners (Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Royal Conservatory of Music, Canadian Stage, Tafelmusik and others, several currently paused for the summer) — reserved online with a TPL card. Bonus through September 7, 2026 only: the federal Canada Strong Pass makes AGO general admission free for everyone 17 and under (any residency, not just Ontario) and 50% off for ages 18-24 — layered on top of AGO's standing free-admission policies above.
