Student Survival
If you're a post-secondary student in the Toronto area trying to make ends meet — food, money, health, legal trouble, or just finding the free stuff your tuition already half-pays for — this page is for you. Entries are grouped by campus where the resource is campus-specific, and marked clearly when something is open to any student or any Toronto resident, not just yours. Nothing here requires you to already know the right office to ask.
A repeated honesty note before you start: a resource run by one school's student union is almost never open to students at a different school. Where an entry below says "University of Toronto students only," "TMU students only," or "York students only," that is not a formality — front-desk staff will check. If your school isn't listed for a given need, check the "anyone can use this" sections first, then ask your own students' union what its equivalent is.
I need food this week
Campus food banks first — they're built for exactly this, and none of them shame you for showing up. General-population food banks near your campus are listed after, honestly labelled as not student-specific — anyone can use them, students included.
UTSU Food Bank (University of Toronto) Free, year-round campus food bank for any U of T student facing food insecurity — single students and students with families alike. Summer 2026 hours: Fridays 11am–3pm, running through Aug 28, 2026 (Room 136, Student Commons, 230 College St, Huron St entrance) — Fall/Winter 2026-27 schedule not yet posted; confirm before relying on this outside summer. Register for a free Daily Bread Client ID first, then book an appointment via Calendly (opens Wednesdays 9:30am for the following week). Bring a T-card or copy of your current timetable, plus reusable bags. utsu.ca/food-bank Who it's for: University of Toronto students only. Appointment required — not a walk-in.
Good Food Centre (Toronto Metropolitan University) Free campus food bank for any TMU student facing any level of food insecurity. Same-day in-person registration available, or book an intake appointment. Hours Mon/Wed/Thu 12–3pm, Tue 2–4pm. A separate site note references "appointment-only after 3:00 PM" in summer — confirm this applies to Good Food Centre before a late visit. SCC B-03A (basement), 55 Gould St. Phone: (416) 979-5000 ext. 552362. yourtmsu.ca/services/food Who it's for: TMU students only. Walk in same-day, or by appointment.
YFS Food Support Centre (York University) Free non-perishable food and basic-need items for York University students who can no longer afford them. Hours are posted only as an image on the org's page and could not be confirmed as text; document requirements aren't stated — confirm both when you reach out. Reach out by email or phone to arrange support — 005 Second Student Centre, Keele campus, 416-736-2100 ext. 44861, foodcentre@yfs.ca. yfs.ca/fsc Who it's for: York University students only. Email or phone first — not a pure walk-in.
Free YFS Grocery Shuttle (York University) Free shuttle bus looping between York's Keele campus and a FreshCo grocery store (Bathurst & Steeles) on select fall/winter semester evenings, 6–9pm. Pickup points: Calumet Loop, Second Student Centre lot, Winters Bus Loop. Not running right now — this is a fall/winter-semester- evening service; 2026/27 dates are not yet posted. Honesty flag, reconfirmed 2026-07-30: real and has run in prior semesters, but the current-year schedule still isn't posted — the provider's own page still says "check back later for the official dates of 2026/2027." Confirm current dates before planning around it. yfs.ca/groceryshuttle Who it's for: York University students only. Seasonal — fall/winter semester evenings only.
Not student-specific, but worth knowing about if your campus food bank is closed, out of range, or not enough
These are general-population food resources, open to anyone in Toronto — not run by any school, and staff won't ask if you're enrolled anywhere. Listed here because students living on tight budgets near downtown/east-end campuses use them heavily in practice.

Separately, a biweekly food-bank component at the YSM Davis Centre (270 Gerrard St E) provides 3–5 days' worth of groceries, by appointment only (416-929-9614 x3200), Tue–Fri 10am–12pm and 1–3pm, closed Mon/Sat/Sun and Dec 24–Jan 2, restricted to a Downtown East catchment (south of Bloor St, east of Yonge St, west of the Don Valley Parkway) — bring photo ID for all household members, proof of address, and proof of recent income for a first visit. Honesty flag: the specific "free hot meals, dine-in or takeaway" claim for the general adult/youth meal program could not be independently reconfirmed on this review — the relevant YSM subpages remained unreachable to the fetch tool; the food-bank details above were independently reconfirmed. ysm.ca/get-help Who it's for: anyone, Toronto Downtown East, for the food bank (catchment-restricted); youth 16–24 for the Evergreen program. The 2026 clinic ran Tuesday April 7 – Friday April 17, 2026, 10am–6pm, in-person at the TMSU Office (SCC, 55 Gould St, 3rd floor) — that season is now over and registration is closed as of this check. A virtual option (eligibility screener plus an external accountant) also ran for students who couldn't attend in person. The formal Spring/Summer 2026 application window (May 15–July 15) has also now closed on its own terms, and no reopening date has been announced. Khan Academy Free, ad-free online courses and practice exercises from basic math through AP-level and early college subjects. Honesty flag, reconfirmed 2026-07-30: Khan Academy's own site still could not be read by the fetch tool (khanacademy.org, /about, and /about/tos again returned a JavaScript-disabled placeholder with no readable content) — the free-tier claim below is carried over from an earlier check, not independently reconfirmed via a primary source this review, though it is additionally corroborated by independent third-party sources checked 2026-07-30. No indication of any change; a paid AI-tutor add-on (Khanmigo) exists separately and isn't required for the core library. khanacademy.org Who it's for: anyone, anywhere. Free, online.

I need a haircut, personal care, or day-to-day discounts
Glassbox Education — GBX Salon "Future Talent" student services Discounted haircuts, colour and styling from student/apprentice stylists supervised by senior educators — the salon's own page confirms a two-tier PRO TEAM vs FUTURE TALENT model. Exact FUTURE TALENT pricing is not published on the page and could not be confirmed via the booking widget (JS-rendered, unfetchable) or web search — treat any specific figure (including a $22-haircut anecdote seen online) as unverified. Address could not be independently confirmed this review either — call to confirm location before travelling. glassboxeducation.com/pages/thestudio Who it's for: anyone, Toronto — not student-restricted, just staffed by students. Not free — discounted. Book online or call 416-953-7098 to confirm pricing and location.
University of Toronto Free Store Free clothing, shoes, books, kitchenware, small appliances and office supplies — take anything you want. Pan-campus: current U of T students, staff and faculty at all three campuses (St. George, UTSC, and UTM) are eligible, not St. George only — though the physical store itself is at Borden Building South, 487 Spadina Cres, Tue–Thu 12–2pm, closed reading weeks/exams/holidays. A parallel UTSC Free Store also exists. The official page lists closures only for reading weeks, exams and holiday breaks — no summer closure is posted — but the store is volunteer-staffed and the comparable UTSC Free Store explicitly cuts back to appointment-only over summer, so treat July/August hours as unconfirmed; call ahead or check the store's social channels before a summer visit. fs.utoronto.ca — Free Store Who it's for: current U of T students, staff and faculty across St. George, UTSC and UTM — TCard required at entry, not open to the general public.
I want free or cheap culture, sport, and things to do that aren't studying

Barnicke Gallery (Hart House) and University of Toronto Art Centre (University College). U SPORTS Varsity Blues home games (University of Toronto) In-person U SPORTS college sports (hockey, basketball, football, volleyball and more). Football season has not started as of late July — the 2026 home opener is Sunday, August 30 vs Queen's (7pm, Varsity Stadium), a week before the Labour Day weekend some readers might assume. Remaining 2026 home dates: Sep 19 vs Western, Oct 3 vs Guelph, Oct 17 vs York. For football specifically (the only sport with confirmed current pricing): $20 general admission / $30 reserved seating / $15 youth, and free for U of T students and staff with a valid TCard. Pricing for other sports wasn't independently confirmed this review — don't assume the football numbers carry over. varsityblues.ca/feature/tickets Who it's for: anyone can attend as paid general admission; free entry specifically for U of T students/staff with a valid TCard (confirmed for football; likely but not confirmed for other sports).
I'm a student parent
This guide doesn't yet have campus-specific childcare or student-parent bursary rows confirmed — that's a real gap, not an oversight (see report). In the meantime, general-population supports that a student parent can use:
Student Nutrition Program (SNP) Free breakfast, morning meal, lunch and/or snack programs at Toronto schools and community sites, universally available to every student regardless of family income — the provider's own page frames this as deliberately universal ("all participants benefit... regardless of their socioeconomic status"). Access is set at the school/site level, so ask your child's school office what's running there. Runs during the school year (September–June) only — does NOT operate during summer break. As of this update (late July), this program is not running; it resumes in September. For summer food access for children, the City's separate CampTO Nutrition Program provides a free daily snack to children enrolled in CampTO day camps (late June–August); camp registration itself may carry a fee unless subsidized. Not for post-secondary students themselves — included here because it's the relevant "food for my kids" resource if you're a student parent with school-age children. toronto.ca — Student Nutrition Program Who it's for: all K-12 students, Toronto — no eligibility test.
I'm an Indigenous student
First Nations House — Indigenous Student Services (University of Toronto) Culturally relevant support for Indigenous students at U of T: academic advising, financial-aid/ scholarship guidance, meetings with Traditional Teachers, Indigenous Wellness Counselling, Indigenous Peer Group Mentorship, Firekeeper training, and Indigenous Student Orientation/ Graduation events. Some cultural/social events and the Resource Centre are open to the wider U of T community. Office activity continues through summer 2026, but at least one specific micro-schedule on the page (Indigenous Accessibility Advisor drop-ins) carries a stale, unrefreshed note — call or email ahead (fnh.info@utoronto.ca / 416-978-8227) to confirm summer availability before visiting in person. Borden Building North, 563 Spadina Ave, 3rd Floor. studentlife.utoronto.ca/department/first-nations-house Community-specific — this door is for Indigenous students at U of T (all three campuses); some events open more broadly per the provider's own framing. Not open to the general public.
Post-Secondary Student Support Program (PSSSP) Non-repayable federal funding for First Nations students registered under the Indian Act pursuing post-secondary education — tuition, books, travel support and living allowances, up to $53,000/yr (up to $90,000/yr in extraordinary cases). Funding is limited, not all eligible students are funded, and applications are valid one school year only. Apply through your own First Nation or First Nations-designated organization, not a direct federal portal — contact your band office. Inuit students should instead use the separate Inuit Post-Secondary Education Strategy. sac-isc.gc.ca — PSSSP Community-specific — First Nations students registered under the Indian Act, Canada-wide. Apply via your band office, not directly.
Not student-specific, but worth knowing if money is the real problem
These are general-population supports, not built for students — but disproportionately useful to anyone living on a student budget. None require you to be enrolled anywhere.
Fair Pass Transit Discount Program 36% off TTC adult single-ride PRESTO fares. The discount's continuation is subject to annual City Council funding approval — not guaranteed indefinitely. The separate TTC Monthly Pass product (including the discounted Fair Pass Monthly) is discontinued August 31, 2026 and replaced September 1, 2026 by automatic fare capping — free travel after 47 paid trips in a calendar month for anyone tapping PRESTO or debit/credit card. Income-tested (75% of LIM-AT: 1 person $22,691/yr; 4 people $45,383/yr), ages 20–64 only (other ages use TTC concession fares — check whether a standard post-secondary/student TTC pass, priced separately from Fair Pass, is a better fit if you don't qualify on income). Not student-specific — this is an income-based program, not a student discount. toronto.ca — Fair Pass Who it's for: income-qualifying Toronto residents aged 20–64. Requires proof of income.
Community Fridges Toronto, Daily Bread Food Bank, Toronto Lawyers Feed the Hungry — see "I need food this week" above; all are general-population, not campus resources, already listed there rather than repeated here.
