Student Survival — Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU)

Selection rule for this page: an entry qualifies only if it's run by or exclusively for Toronto Metropolitan University students — a TMU student union/association service, a TMU school-level emergency fund, or a TMU-specific campus program. Nothing here requires you to already know which office to ask, but everything here does require you to be a TMU student (or, for the health/dental plans, to already be paying the fee that funds one). TMU has a single downtown campus — there is no multi-campus split to navigate here the way there is at York, UTM/ UTSC, Seneca or Humber.

The biggest thing this page gets right that a lot of "student" guides miss: TMU students aren't one group. Full-time undergrads (TMSU), graduate students (TMGSU), and part-time/continuing- education students (TMAPS) are three different unions with three different health plans, three different legal-aid doors, and — critically — different rules for who can get emergency money. Every entry below is labelled which group it's for (all TMU students / undergrad / grad / part-time), so you're not stuck reading eligibility rules for a school-plan you're not actually in.

I need food this week

Good Food Centre (Toronto Metropolitan University) Free campus food bank for any TMU student — undergrad or grad — facing any level of food insecurity. Same-day in-person registration, or book an intake appointment. Hours Mon/Wed/Thu 12–3pm, Tue 2–4pm. SCC B-03A (basement), 55 Gould St. Partner agency of Daily Bread Food Bank. TMU Free Food Project (TMU Eats) Free meal — your choice of a halal-meat or vegetarian option, with one drink and one snack; certified kosher, vegan and gluten-free available on request — one per student, distributed at the Hub Café during each semester's final exam period. Exact dates are confirmed near the end of each term (not a fixed calendar date), funded through the Office of the President with seven TMU student societies. Faculty/staff may purchase a meal while supplies last. torontomu.ca/tmueats — Free Food Project For: all TMU students, during exam periods only. Walk in; no registration mentioned.

I need money — emergency grants, bursaries, and tax help

TMU students facing sudden financial hardship have six separate money doors, split by which group you're in — worth knowing all six exist, because being turned away from one (or ineligible for one by design) doesn't mean you're out of options.

TMSU Emergency Grant Program (undergrad) Up to $500 per semester for TMU students facing unexpected financial instability — sudden loss of income, medical/dental emergency, housing instability, urgent family travel, or other unforeseen expenses. Apply via a Google Form during each semester's open application window; one grant per semester. As of this check, the Summer 2026 window remains on hold — the provider's own page states the Grants Committee is still reviewing 150+ applications received May 15–30, 2026, due to overwhelming demand. yourtmsu.ca/services/grants For: TMU students, run by TMSU (the full-time-undergrad union). Application-window dependent.

Student Financial Assistance (SFA) Emergency Bursary (undergrad — domestic only) Non-repayable, one-time emergency bursary for domestic TMU students (undergraduate, certificate, medicine, or law) facing an unforeseen financial crisis affecting academic progress. Opens within about a week of TMU's Study Week, fall and winter semesters only. Apply through AwardSpring; you must show you've exhausted other resources and document the emergency. Cannot cover tuition, residence, travel, or several other named costs. Explicitly excludes graduate students and international students — the page itself names where each should go instead (see the next two entries). torontomu.ca — SFA Emergency Bursary For: domestic (citizen/PR/convention-refugee) TMU undergrad/certificate/medicine/law students only; minimum GPA 1.67. Excludes grad and international students by design.

TMU Graduate Student Emergency Bursary (Yeates School) (grad) The university-run counterpart for one of the two groups the SFA bursary above excludes: TMU's own emergency bursary for graduate students with financial need. Honesty flag: amount, detailed eligibility and the application process aren't published on the general funding page — you're told to "contact your program for further information," or reach the Yeates School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies directly. Real and confirmed to exist (the SFA page itself names it as the referral destination for grad students), just thin on public documentation. torontomu.ca/graduate — Funding For: TMU graduate students with financial need. TMU Emergency Bursary for International Students (ISS) (international students) The counterpart for the other group the SFA bursary above excludes: a one-time, non-repayable emergency bursary specifically for TMU international students facing a sudden financial emergency — a natural disaster, risk of housing/food insecurity, fire, theft, accident, sudden family breakdown because of abuse, or falling victim to a scam or phishing scheme. Run by International Student Support (ISS), not the general Student Financial Assistance office. Does not cover routine (insured) medical expenses, tuition/residence/arrears, poor budgeting, or ongoing/anticipated hardship rather than a present emergency — and is explicitly not for international students paying domestic fees or on an open work permit. Apply via AwardSpring: a detailed budget form, a maximum-500-word description of the emergency and your financial plan if the bursary isn't approved, and supporting documents (e.g. a police report, banking records, email correspondence). Decisions within 2–3 weeks; funds are deposited to MyServiceHub and are taxable income (a T4A is issued). TMAPS Emergency Grant (part-time / continuing-ed / distance-ed) Up to $500 once per academic year (Sept–Aug) for TMU part-time degree, continuing-education (Chang School), or distance-education students facing serious, unexpected emergency financial need — medical emergency, death of a family member, eviction, or job loss are the provider's own listed examples. Apply online; submit supporting documentation by email to vp.services@tmaps.ca (cc internal@tmaps.ca) or in person. Decisions within 10 business days; funds e-transferred. tmaps.ca/grants For: TMU part-time/continuing-ed/distance-ed students, TMAPS members, under 65. Excludes full-time undergrads and grad students.

TMAPS Bursary (part-time / continuing-ed / distance-ed) A second, separate TMAPS door: up to $500 per term (not per year) for general financial hardship, rather than a sudden emergency specifically — apply with income/expense details and a 100–500 word anonymous personal statement. Once per academic year, maximum 3 times across your studies. Summer 2026: July 6–Aug 3; Fall 2026: Sept 14–Oct 30; Winter 2027: Jan 11–Mar 5. tmaps.ca/bursary For: TMU part-time degree, Chang School/continuing-ed, or distance-ed students, TMAPS members.

TMSU (Toronto Metropolitan Students' Union) — Free Tax Clinic Free income tax return filing for simple returns (employment income, pensions, benefits, scholarships, interest under $1,000 — no self-employment/business/rental/capital-gains income), by a CRA-trained team of student volunteers through the CRA's Community Volunteer Income Tax Program. Open to TMSU (full-time undergraduate) and TMAPS (part-time undergraduate) members only. This guide previously flagged conflicting pages over whether TMGSU (grad) members are also eligible. Both provider pages were re-fetched on 2026-07-31 and now agree with each other: neither states TMGSU eligibility. TMAPS's own page describes the clinic as "available to support students who are in an undergraduate degree program, belonging to either TMAPS or TMSU"; TMSU's own page describes it as "free for members of TMSU (full-time undergraduate students) and members of TMAPS (part-time undergraduate students)." Grad students should use the general-population CVITP clinics in the base guide instead unless TMGSU confirms otherwise. TMGSU funding for research and professional growth (grad) Two further TMGSU-run grants, distinct from emergency money above: a Travel Grant (up to $500/year, for presenting at a conference — registration, travel, accommodation; apply via Google Form after attending) and a Professional Development Grant (up to $250/year, for seminar/ certificate/membership fees; activity must be completed before applying). I need free or low-cost health, dental, and counselling support

TMU runs (or its student unions run) three different health & dental plans, split by student group — plus one shared, free, on-campus counselling clinic open to everyone. Know which plan is yours before you assume you're covered (or not).

Centre for Student Development and Counselling (CSDC) — TMU Free, confidential individual and group counselling from psychologists, social workers, psychotherapists and counselling interns, with specialized streams for Black students, Indigenous students, 2SLGBTQ+ students, neurodivergent students, and students with eating disorders. Services are predominantly short-term. JOR-07C (Jorgenson Hall, lower ground floor), Mon–Fri 9am–5pm (closed 11:30am–12:45pm). TMSU Health & Dental Plan (undergrad) Health, mental-health and dental insurance for TMU full-time undergraduate students — prescription drugs, vision, paramedical practitioners, dental care, plus mywellnessplan (therapy/mental-health resources) and myvirtualdoctor (24/7 online physician access). Not free — included in mandatory TMSU fees you already pay, unless you opt out (Fall 2026 opt-out deadline: Oct 9, 2026, via mystudentplan.ca). yourtmsu.ca/services/health For: TMU full-time undergraduate students (TMSU members) only. Fee-included, not free — opt-out available.

TMGSU Health & Dental Plan (grad) The graduate-student equivalent — extended medical, dental, prescription and mental-health coverage for full-time and part-time TMU grad students. New for 2026/27: a Student Assistance Program adds confidential counselling at no cost, available 24/7 — a benefit the undergrad plan above doesn't advertise. Premiums renewed with "no meaningful increase" for 2026/27. Part-time grad students and family coverage must actively opt in. tmgsu.ca/health-dental-plan For: TMU graduate students (full-time and part-time), TMGSU members. Fee-included for full-time; opt-in for part-time/family. Not free.

TMAPS Health & Dental Plan (part-time — degree students only) Drug, paramedical, dental, vision and accidental-injury coverage via Green Shield Canada, for TMU part-time degree students assessed the plan fee. Explicitly does NOT cover certificate- program or Chang School (continuing-education) students — even though they're TMAPS members for bursary/legal/tax purposes, they're excluded from this specific plan. Coverage runs Sept 1–Aug 31 (fall starters) or Jan 1–Aug 31 (winter starters). tmaps.ca/health-dental For: TMU part-time degree students assessed the fee only — not Chang School/certificate students. I need free or low-cost legal help

TMU's three student unions each run their own free legal-advice line — the same practitioner (William "Bill" Reid) staffs all three under separate, union-gated contact channels, so use the one that matches your student group.

TMSU Legal Services (undergrad) Free legal advice and document assistance for all full-time TMU undergraduate students — housing, employment, debt, family, criminal and corporate law, immigration, and government-agency issues — via email, Zoom, or in-person consultation. TMGSU Legal Aid & Advocacy (grad) Same scope of coverage — housing, employment, debt, family, criminal, corporate law, immigration, government-agency issues — for TMU graduate students. I need a laptop, software, or other tech gear

TMU Library Laptop Loan Program Free 8-hour laptop loans from the Circulation Desk, main floor, TMU Library (350 Victoria St), during library open hours — no overnight borrowing. First-time borrowers complete an Online Laptop Loan Agreement Form; must be in good standing with no library fines over $20. Bring government photo ID, or a utility bill (Continuing Education students without a OneCard also need proof of current enrollment). Overdue fines run $10/hour (or part hour) to a $100 maximum; a lost or damaged laptop costs $1,500 replacement plus a $20 processing charge — know the terms before you borrow. library.torontomu.ca — Laptop Loan Program For: all TMU students (full-time, part-time, Continuing Education), faculty and staff. I want free fitness, sports, or recreation

TMU Recreation & Athletics student membership (RAC / MAC) No separate gym-membership purchase needed — recreation access is bundled into standard TMU student fees. Tap your OneCard at the Recreation & Athletics Centre (RAC), Mattamy Athletic Centre (MAC), or Kerr Hall West Gyms. Includes 2 fitness centres, 25+ weekly group fitness classes, 25 hours/week of supervised drop-in sports, 10+ intramural leagues, aquatics, women's-only programming, and recreational clubs. torontomu.ca/recreation — Student Memberships For: all TMU students, via OneCard. TMU Bold — free admission to home games Free admission to all TMU Bold home varsity games (basketball, hockey, volleyball and more) — tap your OneCard, no ticket required. General public pays $14 (13+) / $11 alumni / $9 youth (3–12) / $9 per person for groups of 10+ / $39 family 4-pack. tmubold.ca — Tickets For: all TMU students, via OneCard. Free — spectator admission, separate from the RAC/MAC participation membership above.

I'm an Indigenous student

Gdoo-maawnjidimi Mompii Indigenous Student Services (TMU) Culturally supportive programming for First Nations, Inuit and Métis students at TMU: specialized academic support and planning, Indigenous-specific scholarships/awards/bursaries, the Indigenous Student Centre, wellness initiatives (wellness days, tea & talk sessions), cultural events and celebrations, and mentorship through role-model events. Located 31 Gerrard St E, Room KHW-389. torontomu.ca/indigenous-student-services Community-specific — this door is for First Nations, Inuit and Métis students at TMU. Not open to the general public.

Honest gaps — things TMU students will look for that the atlas doesn't have yet

A career closet or free professional-attire lending program. Reconfirmed this review: no TMU equivalent of the "career closet" programs common at other North American universities surfaced. TMU's Career & Co-op Centre offers career advising and co-op placement support, but no dedicated free-clothing-lending program. If one exists under a name this search didn't catch, it isn't confirmed and isn't claimed here.

Campus-specific childcare or student-parent bursary support. TMU's own Early Learning Centre / EarlyON Child and Family Centre (Gerrard Resource Centre) is real and free, but the provider's own page confirms it's open to any family in the community, ages birth–6 — it carries no TMU- student priority, restriction, or benefit stated anywhere on the page, so it doesn't qualify as TMU-student-specific and isn't cited here. No TMU-specific student-parent bursary was found. Still a real gap.

A TMU-specific commuter or transit program. No U-Pass and no TMU-negotiated transit discount was found — the transit discounts listed on the TMU OneCard discounts page (GO Transit 40% off, TTC student rates) are general post-secondary-student programs available at any Ontario school, not something TMU itself runs or gates.
